Speak of the devil and he shall appear…
Yesterday’s tardy Friday Feature, about the proposed football stadium in Carson, CA, included an oblique reference to an earlier post, which cited John Oliver’s reporting, on his HBO show Last Week Tonight, about the general swindle that is stadium financing.
It turns out Oliver is keeping an even keener eye on the sports world than I thought, as evidenced by yesterday’s episode of LWT, which featured an extensive takedown of daily fantasy sports.
It was a gratifying feature to watch, as I have been ringing that bell for a while now (in posts including this, this, this and this). Indeed, the first of those posts dates all the way back to the beginning of this year, when the world was young and daily fantasy was all peaches and candy and no one ever considered there might be anything wrong with the thing…
I should point out that my objections to daily fantasy–beyond the obvious, that it perverts the relationship of the fans to the sports they watch–do not lie with the gambling part of it. I don’t really have a problem with the gambling; it’s the lying that bothers me. Tell me the truth about what you’re up to, and most of the time I’ll give you a pass. Just don’t try to bullshit me about it.
Naturally, there was no lack of truth-telling in Oliver’s report on the industry. LWT laid the problems out in what amounts to a very good, succinct summary of what’s been going on with the industry, and why its troubles are probably just beginning. If you’re an HBO subscriber, I strongly recommend you check it out.
Anyway, it’s nice to see I’m not the only one calling this nonsense out, at least among media figures to whom people will actually listen. Welcome aboard, John.
