The Nashville Predators have the best record in the NHL–at least for the moment. The team that is the usual answer to the usual questions–“The Nashville What?”; “The What Predators?”; “The Who What?”–is in first place, and it’s no quirk produced by cheap overtime losses. They’re leading the league in points and they’re tied for most wins (with the Islanders, another surprise team, who stopped Nashville’s winning streak this evening). And the Preds should get fat again with nothing but dregs and relative pushovers coming up next on the schedule (Flyers, Sabres, Avalanche and Wild, in that order). Will they be able to ride Rinne and carry this exceptional performance all the way through to the Cup? Will we see another non-hockey hotbed produce a champion á la Tampa Bay and Carolina around a decade ago? The jury’s still out as of now, but Nashville could inject some much needed interest into what has otherwise been an uninteresting season.
